Vitaly Mutko stepped down from his role as the chairman of the organizing committee for the 2018 World Cup.
He also confirmed recently that he left his position temporarily as the president of the Russian Football Union to clear his name following the allegation that he runs a state-sponsored doping programme.
With less than six months remaining before the biggest tournament begins in Russia, the Russia 2018 media office announced that the resignation of Mutko will not affect the preparation for the big event.
“The change in the leadership of the Russia 2018 Local Organizing Committee will not affect the preparation of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Our goal remains unchanged – to host the tournament at its best organizational level for the fans and participants.” The Russia 2018 media office said
Meanwhile, FIFA acknowledge the decision that has been made by the 59-year-old Russian Deputy Prime Minister.
“FIFA understands Mr. Mutko’s decision which was also taken in the best interest of the FIFA World Cup next summer. FIFA thanks Mr. Mutko for his invaluable contribution to the preparations for the competition so far.”
Mutko, who has been the minister of sport from 2008 to 2016, is expected to replace as RFU president by the chief executive of Russia 2018, Alexei Sorokin.
