International Football Association Board confirmed that they are going to give red cards for off-the-ball incidents caught by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
According to IFAB technical director David Elleray, players can receive retrospective red cards from the referees during the biggest football tournament in Russia if VAR caught something away from the action. (Don’t forget to check 12BET for the best Free Betting Tips)
Meaning, VAR can send the player off the pitch if there are missed calls, serious conflicts and other violent occurrence that needs to be reviewed by the VAR.
“If there is something away from the action that has been missed and it later comes to the attention of the VAR or the assistant VAR, then they can inform the referee and he can send the player off, even if it is later in the match. We do not anticipate this happening very often… this would only be for serious red-card offences.” Elleray said
Moving forward, this will be the first time that the VAR will be used in the history of World Cup. (Sign Up now for more updated sports news and events)
The said assistant device has been criticized and caused some controversies after it was tested in FA Cup and Carabao Cup games this season.
One who complained to the VAR was Tottenham Boss Mauricio Pochettino by saying that the technology could kill the emotion of the game.
Moving forward, the 2018 World Cup will kick off on the 14th of June until the 15th of July.
