Peru dealt a crushing blow in football as their captain Paolo Guerrero will miss the 2018 World Cup finals.
FIFA announced the suspension of Guerrero for one-year after he was tested positive for cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine, a stimulant substances banned by the football’s governing body.
The ban started last November 3 after their World Cup qualifying match in Argentina last October 5.
Failing a doping test means he will miss the whole competition in Russia and it also prevents the 33-year-old Peruvian forward from playing all domestic and international games.
Cocaine includes in the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) list of performance-enhancing materials.
Guerrero, who scored five goals in qualifying, can appeal to FIFA to overturn the ban. However, if he fails, the captain and the Peruvian soccer federation will undergo to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.
Peru had an amazing journey by defeating New Zealand in a two-legged playoff during the qualifications that see them participate in World Cup, the biggest football tournament, for the first time since 1982.
