AFC Bournemouth forward Jermain Defoe continues to hope that he could get another shot for this summer’s World Cup with England.
Last season, Defoe was able to keep his place for the World Cup qualifiers but late last year the striker he has been ruled out due to a serious ankle injury.
However, the 35-year-old is still fighting for his dream to play for England and get Gareth Southgate’s attention. (Don’t forget to check 12BET for more Soccer Betting Tips)
Defoe, who hasn’t started a game since December for Bournemouth, scored his fourth goal of the season as he came off the bench to equalize and salvaged the Cherries to a 2-2 away draw over Watford.
Moving forward, Defoe has scored 20 goals in his 57 total appearances for England and will try to convince Southgate to include him to the squad going to Russia with Bournemouth having six games left to play in the Premier League. “I came here (to Bournemouth) as an England player. I worked so hard to get back in the squad and signed here as an England player. I have missed the last three squads because I am not playing. I spoke to the manager a few months ago and it’s as simple as that – you have got to be playing and scoring goals and see what happens. It’s not up to me; it’s up to the manager. We will see what happens. I understand I have got to be playing. You can’t just assume you’re going to get in the squad because of what you have done over the years. You have got to be playing, you have got to be performing and you have got to be scoring goals. Once I start doing that I will feel I’m ready to go now. If I can get a run of games I am going to score goals because it’s something I have always done.”
