Manchester United Ashley Young claimed that his England national team will be at Russia to fight and win the World Cup 2018 title.
Among England manager Gareth Southgate’s 23-man squad, not a single member has experienced winning a match at the biggest football tournament.
United wing-back, Young is one of the several athletes to prepare and enjoy their first ever World Cup experience.
In April, Premier League Champions Manchester City defender Kyle Walker said that it would require “a miracle” for England to triumph in Russia.
Young opposed this and expressed positivity as Southgate’s men train at St. George’s Park ahead of Saturday’s friendly match against Nigeria at Wembley.
“To be honest, I don’t think you go into a tournament not trying to win it and that’s exactly what we will be doing,” Young said in a news conference.
When presented with Walker’s comments, the Manchester United man added: “At times you need luck, sometimes you create your own luck. But you don’t go into a tournament thinking ‘right, we’re going to get only this far.’ You go into a tournament wanting to win it and that’s exactly what we’ll be doing.”
Along with Young, Gary Cahill is also part of England’s 23-man. The Chelsea captain is desperate to have a better World Cup experience this time after his side miserably exited the group stage back in the year 2014.
“My advice would be to go and play their football and relax in the environment as much as you possibly can, to get the best out of yourself,” he expressed. “It’s a very intense environment, but it’s something you should embrace.
“These boys have got many, many years ahead I’m sure, but you shouldn’t look [at it] like that. You should look like it’s your last one because you never know what’s round the corner. I just want to try to enjoy this tournament.
“Enjoy means go as far we possibly can. Enjoy means by winning games. That’s the only way you enjoy it.”
